Since last years departure of Elizabeth Hasselbeck from the co-host roster, The View has returned to being hosted by women who are not shy about their Liberalism. However, viewers saw a rare side of several co-hosts when the show welcome retired neurosurgeon and staunch Conservative Dr. Ben Carson to visit their show on Tuesday.
Recently, Dr. Carson has been making the rounds promoting his new book One Nation: What we can all do to save America’s future. On his book tour, Carson has frequently been focusing on the topic of ignoring the popular demand to obey a politically correct culture. Yet on Tuesday, Dr. Carson and the co-hosts of The View spoke about a completely different topic: the welfare state.
“When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors,” Carson began. “When you take somebody and pat them on the head and say, ‘There there, you poor little thing… Let me give you housing subsidies, let me give you free health care because you can’t do that.’ What would be much more empowering is to use our intellect and our resources to give those people a way up and out,” he concluded.
The women were so struck by what Dr. Carson was saying that he had to ask them to let him finish his statement numerous times before he could finish his point. The surprising moment came when Whoopi Goldberg, a woman who never shy’s away from an argument with a Conservative, agreed with Dr. Carson.
“Because the welfare system is so bizarre, you can’t work, they don’t allow you to work because they take the money from you. So if we fix the system so that it doesn’t hurt the people, maybe they’ll get better,” Goldberg agreed.
It was refreshing to see two people with drastically different political views on nearly every topic find common ground on the failure that is the welfare state that currently resides in the United States. As Dr. Carson explained, these various welfare programs force people to rely and depend on them, and then virtually punish them if they ever try to get back into the workforce.
Unfortunately, the Obama administration is unlikely to do anything about these increasingly concerning problems seeing as they are in the midst of more scandals with Benghazi, the VA, etc. etc. etc. The list just keeps growing.
However, Dr. Carson hinted while visiting The View and on many, many other occasions that a 2016 run is not out of the question for himself. Maybe he will be the one to make it a priority since he clearly knows it’s an issue and wants something done about it.
