As President Obama heads to California for a three-day fundraising trip, he has apparently decided not to stop by one of his favorite West coast hot spots: the late night TV circuit. Since he first entered the spotlight back in 2007, Obama has been a big fan of late night shows due to their modern, young audience, and the laid back nature of the interviews.
Who would rather face: Barbara Walters or Jimmy Fallon?
TMZ reported that the President was scheduled to arrive at the El Capitan Theater at 3 pm on Wednesday to film a segment for ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ which they confirmed through multiple sources. The Secret Service had begun the process of running background checks on employees, but the White House pulled the plug on the visit. When TMZ called to inquire why Mr. Obama changed his mind, Kimmel’s publicist claimed the President was never scheduled to be on the show.
However, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed the cancelled visit in his Tuesday, July 22 presser.
“We had been in touch with representatives of Mr. Kimmel’s show about the possibility of participating — about having the president participate in that program on this trip,” Earnest said. “We ultimately elected not to have the president do that interview over the course of this trip and that is at least in part related to the challenges of doing a comedy show in the midst of some of these other more serious matters that the president is dealing with in the international scene.”
It’s ironic that whoever wrote Josh Earnest’s daily talking points for him thought that an interview on a comedy show wasn’t appropriate while President Obama deals with “the international scene,” yet going on a three-day fundraising trip is perfectly fine. One would think the genius’ that the President surrounds himself with would figure out that nearly every time he goes on a fundraising trip, a catastrophe of some sort occurs (mass shootings, airplanes being shot out of the sky, etc.) and maybe they would take a break.
Clearly they realize how detrimental Obama’s visits to Colorado (where Senator Udall wouldn’t campaign with him), Texas (where Wendy Davis is about to be crushed), and California (…yeah).
