The Entitled Generation

On Friday, President Obama announced a proposal to offer two years of free community college for 9 million students annually, costing $60 billion dollars over a decade. Once again, Father Obama steps in and gives to the entitled generation something they want without working for it. Obama said, “Two years of college will become as free and universal as high school is today.” If this is true then doesn’t that remove the value of a college degree? Is college for everyone? Who’s going to pay for the “free college” since the government doesn’t own anything without taking it from the people?

Once again the President tries to become the parent to a generation that already feels that they are entitled to anything. Now the proposal that President Obama speaks about has rules that each student must follow approximately a 2.5 grade point average and continue working towards a college diploma. The government is giving “free college” and only demanding a 2.5 GPA isn’t that lowering the bar for kids and how’s graduating a person with a 2.5 GPA going to help the 21st century economy? A 2.5 GPA is a C+ in most colleges and President Obama wants to award average work.

The proposal sounds like a perfect idea in a perfect world, but currently we aren’t in a perfect world. We have seen that this government doesn’t have the capability to deliver a good product (Affordable Care Act). Now let’s talk about who’s going to pick up the tab. According to the White House the federal government is going to pick up 75% of the cost and the state will pick up 25% of the cost. Now where is all this magical money is going to come from? The government doesn’t own anything if is not from us the people.

In other words “Free College” is going to come out of taxpayers pockets. Is that fair? What if a person doesn’t want to go to college and is a taxpayer?

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense. (Proverbs 12:11 ESV)

As a college student myself I know is hard to find a job that supports your lifestyle plus college. But isn’t that what life is about? Learning to prioritize what’s important and working towards what you want. The Bible speaks about the lazy worker and the hard worker. God rewards the hard worker and punishes the lazy. Isn’t free college from the government a lazy way to start the higher education? Why give the burden to others when you are the one that wants to attend college?

College is for those who want to continue their education and get a higher education. Many people find that college is not for them so they drop out and become entrepreneurs. Also organizations and corporations have scholarship programs that any person can apply for as long as they meet the requirements. Let’s keep the government out of home and schools. Nothing is free when it comes from the government; always remember that.

For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 ESV)
