The Irony of Liberal Feminism

Carly Fiorina challenged modern feminism in a speech yesterday at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, reports the Washington Examiner. According to Fiorina, modern feminism is not about advancing and defending women’s rights but about advancing an ideology that goes against everything feminism was founded upon.

The Washington Examiner reports:

“Feminism began as a rallying cry to empower women — to vote, to get an education, to enter the workplace,” Fiorina will say. “But over the years, feminism has devolved into a left-leaning political ideology where women are pitted against men and used as a political weapon to win elections.”

The left has used the “war on women” narrative to shut up those who disagree with them, labeling them as “anti-woman”. The left has even called out female Republicans such as Joni Ernst from disagreeing with them.

According to the Examiner:

Fiorina will say the struggles women are facing in America are caused by liberal policies. She proposes the feminist-friendly solution of hiring more women to increase diversity.

Feminism was originally founded on the idea of a woman’s right to choose. But here is the irony of liberal feminism–you have to choose what the left says you can have. So in reality, it isn’t about choice. It’s only about choice so long as choose to be a lesbian, pro-choice woman. Should you choose to be a straight, pro-life, Christian, homeschooling, stay-at-home mom with ten kids, you will targeted by the left.

Fiorina has defined feminism in a way that is very similar to the ideas that the original feminist movement was founded on:

“A feminist is a woman who lives the life she chooses. We will have arrived when every woman can decide for herself how to best find and use her God-given gifts…A woman may choose to have five children and home-school them. She may choose to become a CEO … or run for president.”

According to Fiorina: “it was time for America to redefine feminism and liberate women for liberal stereotypes that define success too narrowly.” Liberal feminists define success as power, money, position and fame. True success is whatever you want it to be. True success is achieving your goals, whether your goal is to be a CEO, launch your own business, become president, or marry and raise ten kids.

In essence, the left is attempting to label any female Republican who disagrees with them as a “self-hating woman.” In reality it is the left’s narrative and those who endorse it, such a Fiorina’s Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, that is self-hating. In fact Clinton is the poster child for the left’s anti-woman ideology which goes against everything about traditional feminism.

Fiorina implied numerous times Thursday that “feminist conservatives like herself, not radical finger-wagging liberals who’ve dominated the sexual equality battlefield for decades, are the people who best advance the legitimate interests of women in America. The ‘failures of progressive feminism,’ she argued, are rooted in the fact that liberals are focused ‘more about winning elections than empowering women,’” reports the Washington Examiner.

Fiorina is a stark contrast to Hillary Clinton; while Clinton claims to be a champion for women’s rights, she advances a narrative which is anti-woman and goes against classical feminism. Fiorina’s ideas of feminism are much closer to those ideas which the classical feminist movement was founded upon.
