School Shootings: Exploiting Our Children

Every time a school shooting happens, such as at Sandy Hook Elementary, we have an emotional response that we must do something to stop these tragedies. This knee-jerk reaction occurs with all shootings, but especially when the lives of innocent children are involved.

Advocates for gun control legislation take advantage of these tragedies under the guise that it is for the safety of the children. They try to guilt you into supporting stricter gun control legislation by making you feel as if you don’t care about the tragic loss of innocent children.

They are exploiting the deaths of innocent children to further their own political agenda. It’s ironic that gun control advocates try to make those who aren’t in favor of stricter gun control legislation feel as if they don’t care about the death of innocent children, when in reality the gun control advocates are the ones who care nothing about the death of innocent children, and are using the death of innocent children to further their political agenda.

What is even more ironic is that the stricter gun control legislation does not make the children any safer. In fact it probably makes them less safe. More guns equals less crime. Stricter gun control legislation means less guns, which in turn must mean more crime. More crime means more shooting sprees. Schools are the perfect target for these wack jobs because they are generally gun free zones. This is just another example of the double standard that the left uses on almost every issue.

Another culprit in the exploitation of our children is the media. Whenever a shooting spree happens, especially one involving children, it is the center of attention for the media. The mainstream media is generally biased towards the gun control agenda so they do everything they can to stir up people’s emotions in hopes of swaying them in favor of stricter gun control laws. They cover it for weeks.

Because the media makes these shootings out to be such a big deal, we often come to the mistaken conclusion that gun crime is much more prevalent than it actually is. Gun crime has been on the decline since 1993, when gun crime was at its peak gun crime has been falling for the last 22 years.

According to a report from NPR:

Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011,’ according to a report by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, ‘and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.’

There were seven gun homicides per 100,000 people in 1993, the Pew Research Center study says, which dropped to 3.6 gun deaths in 2010.

So despite what the media and pro-gun control advocates would have you believe, gun crime is on the decline. The gun control advocates need to face these facts and stop exploiting these school shootings to further their own political agenda.

So the Left is invoking a double-standard once again, no surprise there. So how does this knowledge affect us? Let us examine a recent example of exploitation by the media and the left to further their own political agenda: the Duggars. Regardless of what you think of the Duggars, the media and the left has made an example out of them because of their Christian faith and their outspokenness on controversial issues like gay marriage.

The Left is using scare tactics to basically say, “If you disagree with us, we’ll destroy your life and your family.” The left uses these same scare tactics to push for stricter gun control legislation. The use fear to convince us that if we don’t pass such legislation more innocent children will be killed.

How can we apply this to practical, daily life? Let us turn to history for examples of those who stood against the grain. Rosa Parks was the woman famous for sitting in the white section of an empty bus, where blacks were not allowed to sit even if there were not whites on the bus. Her action sparked the Civil Rights movement which led to equal rights for blacks and the end of segregation in the south.

That doesn’t mean that calling out the left on this double standard, holding them to it, and not allowing them to get away with it will spark a movement similar to the Civil Rights movement. But history has proven, time and again, that when one person makes a bold stand for what is right, many rally to the cause. It just takes one person with the courage to stand up.

Lastly, make sure you’re not falling prey to this yourself, with this one it’s easy to do. When a tragedy like this occurs, do not allow yourself to make any judgements about the situation until you can think about it in logical way. This will likely mean allowing a period of time to pass. Allow yourself to calm down and separate your emotions from the situations.

Consider turning off the television and radio, especially left-leaning media, which will attempt to stir up your emotions. Research the facts of the case. When you have informed yourself about the facts of the situation, go back to contemplate the situation in a logical and non-emotional state.
