Republicans and Immigration Reform

One of the biggest issues for the upcoming election cycle is immigration.  This is a divisive issue, and one that doesn’t need to be avoided or worked around any more. As of now there are approximately 11.7 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

Legal immigration can be a great thing; it gives people a chance to start over or to achieve what they’ve always wanted, because here we believe in the American Dream. Unfortunately, when people come across a border to this country illegally, there are many consequences.

The number of illegal immigrants means that there are more Americans that stay unemployed when available jobs are taken by the illegal immigrants. Additionally, Social Security numbers and peoples’ identities become less secure when immigrants use stolen Social Security numbers in order to get a job.

Republicans have to take a stand against illegal immigration and reform the process. First, we need to fix the fence. There are places in the southern border where “fence” would not be a proper term. Secondly, we need to crack down on things like sanctuary cities. It is not okay for a person who has come to America illegally to be treated as though they are here legally and kept safe from deportation. This isn’t to say that there shouldn’t be an easier path to citizenship from outside the country, but rather that laws were created for a reason and to be followed by everyone.

Another thing that needs to be happen is for the whole country to use E-Verify. If there were more companies and states that would mandate the use of E-Verify for hiring, employers would be able to catch and stop the fraudulence that is caused by using a stolen Social Security number and giving false information on Employment Eligibility Verification forms.

All in all, there are many more reasons that illegal immigration is bad and many more ways it can be fixed for the benefit of this country. There needs to be reformation of the immigration system in order to attempt to stop the problems it is causing.
