Hollywood Celebrities Get It Wrong on Gun Control

About a year ago I did a column on the dangers of celebrity worship.

Several Hollywood celebrity have recently endorsed gun control, and too many people are likely to follow blindly in their footsteps simply because these people are celebrities.

Amy Schumer and Kim Kardashian West have recently endorsed gun control. Amy Schumer is a comedian and actress. Kim Kardashian West is a reality TV star and model. These women are experts at entertaining us. They are not journalists, commentators, or political analysts. I am not saying that they aren’t entitled to have their own opinion or even voice it. In this case their opinion is wrong, but I will fight to the death for their right to voice their wrong opinion.

I’m just saying that you can’t blindly assume everything that comes out of their mouth is gospel just because they are Hollywood celebrities. Not only are they fallible human beings just like you and me, but they are also not experts when it comes to political issues.

Just because you’re a Hollywood celebrity doesn’t mean you have to run around screaming your opinion on the latest political controversy. As I said, I support your right to scream your opinion from the hilltops, but I would really prefer you just shut up, and do what you are good at. You’re an entertainer, not a commentator.

For Schumer, it makes a little more sense as to why she voiced her support of gun control. Schumer first spoke out about gun control after the shooting at a movie theater occurred in Lafayette, Louisiana during a showing of her movie Trainwreck. The irony of is had there been just one armed individual in that movie theater, they could have taken out that psycho and saved who knows how many lives.

So while I disagree with Schumer’s stance, I understand why she spoke out about the issue. Now as for Kim Kardashian West, I am unclear as to why she decided to voice her opinion on this issue other than the fact that she’s a celebrity and thus can pretty much get away with saying anything she wants.

Now if you haven’t already figured it out, I really could care less about Amy Schumer and Kim Kardashian West. So you might think I’m biased. Let’s take country music singer Tim McGraw who also recently came out in favor of gun control. While I admit that I love most of his music, I will have to seriously consider in the future whether I can purchase any of his music or attend his concerts. McGraw is kind of surprising, because I think that it is generally assumed that country music artists are pro-gun. In fact, Brantley Gilbert has a pro-gun tattoo on his back.

So let this be a reminder not to stereotype. Not every country music singer is Brantley Gilbert, and not every pop culture celebrity is Kim Kardashian West. However, just because they’re famous, doesn’t mean they’re right.
