Islamism And The 2016 Election

By now, we have heard almost all the political pundits and politicians recite the standard canon to the effect of “I will be tough on ISIS,” “destroy ISIS” or “defeat ISIS.” While this is the right approach, it is not complete. ISIS is one evil branch of a very evil ideology. This ideology is Political Islam, known as Islamism. Experts like Frank Gaffney, Andrew McCarthy and Robert Spencer have talked much about the threat of Sharia and its adherents. Unfortunately, the presidential front-runners are too often preoccupied with the symptom rather than the cause.

The root cause of ISIS,Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, Hizballah and Hamas amongst many other groups is a desire to kill infidels and conquer in the name of Islam. With the notable exceptions of Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson and to an extent Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, this ideology has not been given the attention it deserves.

While Senator Cruz rightfully calls out Obama’s refusal call out Radical Islamic terrorism by name, he should also educate the public on the threat of Islamist ideology to Western civilization. While Donald Trump brings up the problems which could arise with Muslim immigration he should explain why. The Stealth Jihad, as termed by Frank Gaffney, poses a real threat to American freedom of speech and to the liberties enshrined in the constitution; yet we hear little about it from the political class.

Furthermore, in the context of immigration, Ted Cruz has called for a halt on immigration and refugees from nations controlled by Al Qaeda/ISIS, and a halt on Syrian refugees.  Instead of futile nation building in the Islamic world, a halt on Syrian and other Islamic refugees is prudent in defending against the Islamist threat. Almost all the Republicans running are in favor of halting the Syrian refugee migration.

This is wise, but they should not back down and be ashamed but rather be proud to defend a pro American policy which puts the safety of Americans ahead of political correctness.  They should proudly stand for a secure and safe America with an immigration system that enforces this.  All those running for president should recognize the Islamist threat for what it is and give this issue the attention it requires during this election cycle.
