Former President Bill Clinton said Thursday that the Clinton Foundation will no longer accept foreign donations if Hillary Clinton is elected in November, The New York Times reports.
His statement comes after the foundation received heavy criticism from top Republicans for receiving funds from countries like Saudi Arabia. According to Clinton Foundation spokesperson Craig Minassian, Clinton said that he would resign from the board if Hillary wins. The Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York next month will be the final CGI meeting, regardless of the outcome of the November election.
“Foreign nationals and countries are prohibited from donating directly to American political campaigns, but have given hundreds of millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation, which works globally to combat AIDS/H.I.V., malaria, childhood obesity and climate change, and promotes women’s rights and other causes,” says The New York Times.
The decisions were first reported Thursday by The Associated Press and were later confirmed by Mr. Minassian. The charity will solely rely on contributions from American citizens and charities if Mrs. Clinton become president, the former president explained.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement in response to the report:
“This effort to shield Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation after more than a year of controversy is too little, too late, After all, if everything was above board while Hillary Clinton ran the State Department as the Clintons have said, then why change a thing? But now that they have admitted there is a problem, the Clinton Foundation should immediately cease accepting foreign donations and return every penny ever taken from other countries, several of which have atrocious human rights records and ties to terrorism.
“The fact that the Clinton Foundation and its entities continue to accept foreign donations while Hillary Clinton runs for the White House is a massive, ongoing conflict of interest that gets bigger by the day. This is unprecedented and unacceptable. When that 3am phone call comes, Americans deserve to have a president on the line who is not compromised by foreign donations.”
