New York State Sex Offender Laws
Not only does the State of New York require sex offenders to register, but it also groups sex offenders into categories based on how big of a risk they are to the community. The level one sex offenders are the lowest risk of the registered offenders and are not considered high risk. The level two sex offenders in the State of New York are considered to be moderately dangerous and at a substantial level of risk. The level three sex offenders are the highest risk to the community that surrounds them because they have a history of repeated sexual violence and could be more prone to re-offend. Level three sex offenders have to remain registered as sex offenders for the remainder of their lifetime unless instructed otherwise by the courts.

The counties in New York that have the highest numbers of convicted sex offenders are Bronx county, Kings county, Erie county, New York county, and Oneida county. The top sex offenses in the State of New York are Sexual abuse in the first degree, rape in the first degree, sexual abuse of the first degree; which is sexual contact with an individual of a person under eleven years of age, and rape of the third degree which is when the victim is under seventeen years of age and the assailant is over twenty-one years of age.
