Turn picking up clothes into a basketball game
If you have an empty hamper around the house, bring it into your child’s room and tell them that they get one point for every article of clothing that they make into the basket. If they clean up everything on their floor, they will get bonus points. Tell them that this is a challenge and the next time they need to clean up clothes, they will have a high score that they need to beat.
Encourage them with new bedroom furniture and clothes
It can be easy to convince the family to clean out old stuff if you tell them that they can get brand new things to replace the things they just threw out. Tell your family that they can all get new beds if they help out with the cleaning. Then figure out the differences between California king vs king mattress so you can decide which is best for each family member. You don’t want someone cleaning up space in their room for a bed that won’t fit.
Tell the kids that whoever ends up with more filled trash bags gets the week off of chores
If you have more than one kid, you can turn this into a friendly competition for them. Encourage them to do more work and clean up more around the house by letting them know that whoever ends up with more full trash bags gets to cut back on some chores in the coming days. In the end, you can decide if the other kid deserves some time off of chores as well. But this is enough motivation to get the kids to help.
Tell the kids that if they straighten up their rooms and make their beds, you can get them a special treat or take them out for dinner
You can always get the whole family to work together when you promise a good meal or snack at the end of all of the cleaning. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Anything that is either sugary or ordered in can be the best encouragement. Whether you decide to go get ice cream, make family milkshakes at home, or order a simple pizza, your family will be more than willing to help out with the spring cleaning.
Reward the older kids with more mature things like a longer curfew
You can get the older kids to get more involved with the work around the house by telling them that they can stay out longer or hang out with friends more often at either house. They will still respond well to the food bribe but it might take a little bit more to get them to help with little to no complaints. Use extra curfew hours to pull them into the helping zone a little further than they were before.
Tell your family that the more they get rid of, the more they can buy this year
Much like promising new decor and clothing, you can tell your family that if they get rid of enough stuff, they will be able to replace more. Don’t just promise new beds and new clothing, tell them that they can get a new game, a new brush, or a new laptop if they help with the cleaning without a hint of complaining. The prize doesn’t always have to be related to what you are cleaning up, as long as a prize is involved, so are your kids.
And don’t be afraid to give your kids a job that they don’t usually get. Most kids have trouble helping with chores due to the fact that they are doing the same thing every single day. Let your child vacuum so they can still help but they’re doing something new.
These tips are not for every family and a lot of the rewards are up to you to figure out due to you knowing your family better than anyone else. However, if you are looking for any tips on how to get your family to help out without complaining, trying these should get you more help than what you are currently getting. And you should receive a lot less complaining as long as everyone stays in happy spirits and remembers that they are getting a prize at the end of the day as long as the job is done right.
