Not only are the winter months harsh on your skin, hair, and bodies, but they can also be harsh on your pocketbooks. If you aren’t careful about keeping our house heat inside, it when you receive your next electric bill you may be a bit shocked or even ticked off at how large it is.
Luckily for you, we have some free and inexpensive ways to keep your home heating and cooling bill under control this winter and summer.
How to save money on your heating bill in the winter
Seal your chimney if it’s not being used –
One of the easiest ways to increase your electric bill is by causing your heater to overwork itself due to heat leaking out of your home. If you have a chimney that you’re not currently using, you may forget to close the seal on it which can cause a lot of your homes heat to escape.
Use fans –
While you may think that fans are for the hot months, that’s simply not true. You should be using your fans on the reverse cycle, so they move heat upwards toward your ceiling. This will help trap your heat in your home so your home feels warmer.
Don’t block your vents –
Another silly yet completely overlooked way to keep your home warm is by not blocking your vents. When you block your vents, your home tends to be colder and you may turn up the thermostat trying to get warm. Instead, keep your thermostat set between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit and ensure you aren’t blocking your own warmth in the process.
Use plastic wrap on your windows –
Unless you’ve recently installed new windows, within the last 1-5 years, it’s likely you may be allowing heat to escape by not using plastic wrap around your window frames. You can purchase window wrap from your dollar store for less than $25 and all you need is a hairdryer to install it.
For air conditioner, chemical aircon servicing is must to opt after several months.
Many of us don’t realize around 10-35% of our homes heat escapes through windows alone. Trap your heat inside by following this simple and inexpensive trick.
