This week, our partner, Top in Canada, presents 6 activities to do during the Festival du Voyageur.
The largest winter festival in Western Canada, the Festival du Voyageur is the place to be!
From February 15-24, 2019, take part in the world’s biggest “kitchen party” by celebrating the joys of winter and the joie de vivre of voyageurs from the fur trade era. Outside it can get cold, but inside you can warm up with great French-Canadian food and the lively rhythms of our traditional tunes.
I was almost born with an arrow belt around my waist. I know the Festival du Voyageur well. That’s why I’m sharing with you my list of the TOP 6 activities. I am confident that these must-do’s will ensure the success of your experience of the 50th edition of the Festival du Voyageur. Hello!
TOP 6 THINGS TO DO AT THE Festival Du Voyageur
1- Fort Gibraltar
The interpreters at Fort Gibraltar bring the story of the Voyageur to life in a replica of the original fort built by the North West Company in 1809-1810. The fort played an important role in the legendary conflict between the two fur trade empires: the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company. Fort Gibraltar is open for the duration of the Festival of the Voyageur and offers guided tours to festival-goers.
2- Festi-Bar and the Sugar Shack!
While the children are sucking on the sugar shack, the 18 years old and over can warm up with a little Caribou at the Forks at the new outdoor bar, the Festi-Bar, or at the traditional bar on snow at the Parc du Voyageur. Nothing is more pleasant in winter than to meet with friends over a glass of Caribou. You like it cold? The new Festi-Bar will serve you your Caribou in a cup of ice. If this seems too daring, come to the Sugar Shack for a maple taffy tasting on snow.
3- The return of the dog team races
The 50th anniversary of the Festival is being celebrated in style this year with the return of a very popular activity – sled dog racing. For those who prefer a less rock’n’roll ride, Ed Streeper, a Festival regular and a renowned runner, offers us dog sled rides at reduced speeds. It’s not to be missed!
4- It wouldn’t be the Festival without music! And music, there will be something for everyone. It’s a promise!
More than 150 artists will have you dancing and stomping your feet from morning to night. Indeed, the Festival offers us a great line-up of shows by well-known and lesser-known artists, and of course, some nice surprises from local artists :Bandaline, Jérémie and the Delicious Hounds, and of course, the “boys of the colony”, the Louis Boys!
Don’t miss the silent disco, a first for the Festival du Voyageur in the brand new inflatable dome! You have to see it to believe it.
Prepare your itinerary of shows and activities with the official mobile application or with the online work schedule.
5- Make room for innovation! This year, we invite you to take your selfie #HÉHO2019 with magnificent wood, snow, cheese and chocolate sculptures.
Yes, no kidding. This year, we are sculpting Bothwell cheese and Constance Popp chocolate!
The chocolate exhibit will be on display starting Sunday, February 17th. The Cheese Sculpture Competition will take place on Sunday, February 24th in the inflatable dome at Parc du Voyageur.
6- Getting merchandise and souvenirs couldn’t be easier!
Order your retro jersey, traditional toque and arrow sash and you’re ready to celebrate with us! Once you arrive at the park, visit the souvenir tent and discover the local crafts. Go ahead and spoilyourself!
