When you could say that someone is affected by the addiction to video games? It is when the person prefers to play before eating, sleeping, socializing or studying, experts agree.
José Antonio Rodríguez, Wellness and Counseling psychologist at the Tec Monterrey campus, who is also a gamer, points out that someone is in this condition when it affects their person and third parties.
“If someone gets very angry when the game is taken from him, we can know that he has a dependency, ” he says in an interview for CONECTA.
José Antonio plays Apex Legends , so he knows first-hand the experience of being a regular player of competitive video games.
1) THE TASK FIRST, THEN THE GAME
“The main thing, as in any other activity, are the schedules, ” says José Antonio.
“You need to prioritize and quit after things like school , work, and family .”
José gave as an example the case of “Arce”, a professional League of Legends player.
He was invited to the All-Stars tournament in Las Vegas, one of the most important tournaments organized by the same video game.
However, “Arce” decided to only participate on the first day of the tournament due to ” personal reasons “.
2) THE GAME ENDS WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE CONSOLE
“It’s a matter of knowing that video games only exist inside the console , and not letting it have a negative impact on your life. This is a game, and it’s over, ” says José Antonio regarding setting limits.
” If they tell you a positive comment through the chat, it can even raise your self-esteem, improve your day. But the negative comments, from the famous flamers, it is better to ignore them and remember that this is just a video game.”
3) THE GAME AS A LEADERSHIP DRIVER
“Video games can also help a lot in different aspects: social, dexterity, to de-stress,” José Antonio lists.
“For example, in certain games online or sports there are cases where you have to take the leadership role, or support, and no matter what role you take, you know you’re important for the team. And that the players they can lead to real life. ”
José adds that games are not necessarily the cause of negative behavior in people; as are shooting video games.
These can be very helpful in de-stressing , but he says there is no strong evidence that these games cause aggressive behavior. Try this AEGaming too just for fun.
“There are parents who see as something negative that their children play video games, when in reality, everything depends on the approach that is put; as long as it is of the appropriate classification,” he concluded.
One of the main competitions derived from video games is Esports (electronic sports), which have become a worldwide phenomenon.
Last year the final of the League of Legends World Cup was held in South Korea and reached an audience of more than 200 million simultaneous viewers.
Currently, the first official interuniversity Esports tournament of CONADEIP – National Student Sports Commission of Private Institutions – is held at the Tec de Monterrey campus Guadalajara, as its headquarters.
A MENTAL PROBLEM
The “video game disorder” was recently classified as a mental problem by the World Health Organization (WHO) , according to the publication Newsweek en Español in its June 2018 edition.
A characteristic of this disorder is that it is an activity that occupies too much time in people’s lives.
Psychology specialists cited in the publication clarify that video games by themselves do not pose a threat, but they listed the following warning signs:
When the player feels too much tension
Loses interest in other activities they practiced
Have sleep disorders
Presents withdrawal from family and friends.
Alejandra Delgado , director of athletic programs at Tec, adds: “It is important that the kids know how to manage their time and that they set priorities; if they see a classmate who cannot regulate himself, that they speak about it and do not remain silent .”
