How to get a NYC marriage license

If the license is to be issued by the City Clerk of the City of New York, please contact the New York City Clerk’s Office for current fees and requirements. Couples who do not receive a Certificate of Marriage Registration within four weeks of the wedding should contact the town or city clerk who issued the license.

As you may have read, The Manhattan Office of the City Clerk of New York has recently made its debut as a 500% (in my opinion; A Huge Thank You NYC for the New Manhattan Office) improved and upgraded facility to obtain a marriage license and have a marriage ceremony. In order to begin the process of acquiring a marriage license in NYC’s City Hall, you’ll have to first apply for it either in-person, or online via City Clerk Online Sometimes there are long lines and wait times at the marriage bureau, so you can speed up the process by filling out the application online. If your license was issued by the New York City Clerk’s Office, then they can provide you with certified copies of your marriage license.

However even when this service is available, you and your fiance will need to go to the New York City Clerk’s office together to finalize and sign the application before the license will be issued. In order to receive your New York marriage license, you and your fiance must appear together at the City Clerk’s office to file the application and present proof of age and identity. On June 4, 1971 less than two years after the Stonewall uprising , a group of men and women from the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) walked into the New York City Marriage License Bureau carrying coffee urns and boxes of cake to hold an engagement party for two male couples and to protest the slander” of City Clerk Herman Katz, who had threatened legal action against same-sex holy unions” being performed — yes, already then, in 1971 — by the Church of the Beloved Disciple, which had a largely gay congregation.

Option #1: Return to the NYC clerk, apply for a new marriage license to remarry, specify your hyphenated name on the application, then wait for your new marriage certificate to change your name. Make sure you have a Social Security Card application dully completed, document certifying the name change, such as a court order, divorce decree or marriage certificate, including proof of identity through documents such as ID cards issued by the state, a United States passport or a driver’s license. For those in the City of New York, the license is issued by the City Clerk and the fees to be paid vary from time to time.

The marriage certificate will be sent automatically to the applicants by the town or city’s issuing clerk in 15 or less calendar days once the officiant has completed the license and returned it to the town clerk. Located at 141 Worth Street since 2009, the City Clerk’s Office issues a staggering number of marriage licenses to New Yorkers while also hosting a never-ending stream of meaningful ceremonies. You may apply for a New York marriage license at any city or town clerk’s office.  For more information, be sure to visit www.usmarriagelaws.com for more information.

This certificate is automatically sent by the issuing clerk to the applicants within 15 days after the completed license is returned by the officiate (person who performs the marriage ceremony). Background These handwritten marriage license index books were originally compiled and then microfilmed by the New York City Clerk’s Office. At least 24 hours before going to the City Clerk’s office to get married, you’ll need to obtain your license.

Freedom of Information Law(), the office refused to release the microfilm for a different set of marriage records, the index to New York City Marriage Applications, Affidavits, and Licenses. For copies of marriage licenses issued anywhere in New York State except New York City, a certified copy of the marriage record may be obtained from the office of the town or city clerk who issued the license, or from the New York State Department of Health. This certificate is automatically sent by the issuing clerk to the applicants within 15 days after the completed license is returned by the officiant (person who performs the marriage ceremony).

The City Clerk’s office began to issue marriage licenses and perform civil marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples a month later, on July 24, 2011. But there is a 24-hour waiting period before you may use it. You must return the signed license to the clerk’s office within 15 days after the ceremony
