The prostate is a muscular gland present in the reproductive system of males that makes most of the fluid of their semen and surrounds the urethra. Its muscular action helps in the propulsion of semen, and fluid through the penis during sexual climax. Generally, the prostate has two cycles of growth. First growth occurs during early puberty when it doubles in the size. Second growth cycle occurs when the man is around twenty-five years of age, and it continues as they age.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia occurs in the second cycle of prostate gland enlargement. If you feel trouble urinating, and you are over fifty years of age, then you must visit a top sexologist in Rawalpindi. In this article, we are going to discuss the definition, symptoms, treatment and causes of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

      What is BPH?

It is a benign condition in which prostate enlarges due to excessive cell replication. It does not resemble cancer and does not increase the risk for it. Prostate enlargement exerts pressure on the urethra and therefore limits the outflow of urine. Therefore, males suffering from BPH often complain about trouble in urinating.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of BPH?

The signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia are:

     Painful urination

Nocturia- the person feels to urinate more than two times in the night

    Blood in urine

Dribbling of urine at the end of urination

    A weak stream of urine

    Have to strain while urinating

    Sudden urge to urinate

    Delayed urinary stream

    Urinary incontinence or leakage

    Increased urinary frequency

Unusual colour or smell of urine

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you must consult with a healthcare provider soon.

     How can BPH Be Treated?

Some medicines work by shrinking the size of the prostate. While some work by shrinking the muscles of your prostate and bladder. Your healthcare provider will decide your treatment according to the condition. However, lifestyle changes also play a role in the management of the condition. Drink less water before going out, try pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the muscles of the urinary tract and limit the intake of caffeinated drinks.

What are the Causes of BPH?

There can be many causes of BPH. Some of them are as follows:

    Testicles

The exact cause of BPH is still unknown. But according to some researches, it can occur due to the testicles. People who have got their testicles removed at a young age do not get BPH. Therefore experts believe that testicles and ageing can be the cause of BPH.

    Estrogen

Men produce a hormone called testosterone throughout their lives in a large quantity and estrogen in small quantity. As they age, the level of testosterone decreases, due to which the level of estrogen rises. Estrogen can cause prostate enlargement by increasing the substances that cause growth.

    Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

It plays a role in prostate enlargement. Even when the levels of testosterone decline, the levels of DHT keep on increasing and accumulating in the older men prostate. Experts say that this hormone can cause the growth of the cells of prostate hence leading to BPH. According to researches, men who do not produce DHT, do not get BPH.

    Conclusion

Never take the symptoms of BPH lightly because it can cause a urinary obstruction that can be dangerous for your health. Some medications can also be a cause of BPH. Therefore consult your healthcare provider about it. If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of BPH, you must visit a top sexologist in Lahore.
