Bringing home a new pet is always a joyous event, but is your house ready for a new puppy? A new pup signifies a new chapter in your life, one with a loyal companion by your side. It’s normal to be excited about a new addition to your house, but make sure you don’t forget to puppy-proof your home.

Not sure how? Here’s a quick guide for you:

    1. Protect your carpets

As you welcome your pet to your house, they may not be ready to go to a puppy training school in Orem for obedience training yet. If possible, get stain-proof carpets to protect your floors from pee and poop. Stain-free carpets are generally more expensive, but they are more resistant to stains and deterioration. You can also install dog gates by the entrances of carpeted rooms to keep your pet from going in without your supervision.

    1. Hide your trash cans

Trash cans are the most exciting things to curious puppies, so if you don’t want to come home to garbage all over your floors, keep your trash cans hidden. Moreover, trash cans may contain substances that are toxic to dogs, so keeping them from eating trash is a must.

    1. Keep harmful substances hidden

Puppies don’t know any better, and they may end up eating or sniffing something that they shouldn’t. To prevent accidental poisoning, keep toxic substances such as cleaning materials, toiletries, gum, and paint in places where your puppy cannot reach.

    1. Hide medication

Medication for humans is also a common cause of pet poisoning. Make sure all of your meds are stored in high cabinets or inside drawers and avoid leaving meds on counters, tables, and nightstands.

    1. Create a space for them

Having their own space can make a new puppy more comfortable with the whole adjustment period. A simple crate and bed should suffice, but if you want to give your pet their own little room in the basement or underneath the stairs, don’t hesitate.

    1. Puppy-proof the cords

Electrical cords can pose a serious electrocution risk to your curious pup. To prevent electrical shock, burns, or death, install cord covers and hide electrical cords as much as possible. If you have to leave your puppy unsupervised, make sure you don’t leave charging devices in places where your puppy can reach.

    1. Cover your couch

Will your dog be allowed on the coach? If the answer is ‘yes,’ get a dog-proof couch cover to protect the surface from scratches, shedding, and biting.

    1. Fence in your yard

Dogs are naturally curious and may want to explore what’s beyond your yard. The problem is that they may not always know how to come back. To keep your dog from escaping the yard, install dog-proof fencing that is high enough to prevent your dog from jumping over it. Similarly, the fence should be buried deep into the ground so that your pet won’t be able to dig a tunnel and escape.

Is your house and family ready for a new dog? If you’re a first-time pet owner, these tips will help you create a safe, happy, and healthy place for that cute fur baby.
